Overview

Larson Dairy, based in Creston, Nebraska, operates a 250-cow automated milking facility. Seeking improvements in milk production and overall herd health, the dairy partnered with Oxy Blast® for an on-farm trial that delivered industry-transforming results.

The Challenge

Larson Dairy faced ongoing challenges with rust and iron in their water supply, negatively impacting equipment longevity, herd hydration, and milk output. Despite digging two new wells, the water analysis revealed elevated levels of bicarbonates, manganese, and hardness, still leaving room for optimization.

The Solution

With the guidance of their Oxy Blast® representative, Larson Dairy installed a hydrogen peroxide-based water treatment system:

A peristaltic pump system distributed Oxy Blast® directly into the waterline.
Trial dosage started at 25 parts per million (PPM), incrementally increasing to 100 PPM.

The solution focused on cleaner, oxygenated water that enhanced cow hydration and reduced contaminants.

Implementation

The trial began in February 2020, with Larson Dairy tracking detailed metrics using their robotic milking facility. Comprehensive data from cow groups ensured an accurate comparison between trial and control groups. Maintenance efforts were minimal, with a single 55-gallon drum lasting two months.

7.8 gallons more water consumed and 1.14 pounds more dry matter intake daily.
